Introduction to Virtual Reality
Using a virtual reality headset over your eyes, it removes your thought of presence in the current world and drives you into a new world where you are actually NOT present.i.e you are actually present in the real world but you feel as if you were in another world.(virtual world)
For instance, you are currently in your room now.Using a VR headset you can really feel as if you were swimming with the sharks in an ocean. You can't see the real world around you. It just expands your senses with experiences within by making you BLIND from the current world.
In other words, the world around you is replaced by a computer generated world and that is experienced through a VR headset or a VR box.
Definition of VR from different sources:
Virtual reality(VR) is an interactive computer-generated experience taking place within a simulated environment.[Source: Wikipedia]
The experience in which "The user is effectively immersed in a responsive Virtual World".[source:Fred books,1999]
An artificial environment which is experienced through sensory stimuli(such as sights and sounds)provided by a computer and in which one's actions partially determine what happens in the environment[source: Merriam-Webster Dictionary]
A set of images and sound, produced by a computer, that seem to represent a place or a situation that a person can take part in.[source: Cambridge Dictionary]
How is VR different ?
In a VR headset, whenever the user turns his head the view is updated accordingly. This makes the user immersed into the Virtual World. Where as, while watching any other 3D or 2D movie in a theatre whenever the user turns his head he can see things in the real world. This makes the user less immersed in the movie. The Immersion factor is one of the most important thing which makes VR special.
The VR headsets have two displays, one infront of each eye and we perceive our vision similar to how we perceive the real world with our eyes. This is called 3D stereo vision. This is another feature which makes VR different.
The VR headsets traps the user's visual perception. There is no escape in the headset to view the real world. The user can move in the virtual world and enjoy the virtual environment.
The user has dynamic control of view point.
